Nepo Baby vs LAPO Baby: which Lagos Life start is better?
The first big moment in Lagos Life isn't your choice at all. During character creation the birth lottery randomly makes you either a Nepo Baby (born into wealth and connections) or a LAPO Baby (starting out on a micro-loan). It's become the game's most-discussed mechanic — and the source of endless gist online.
What each start looks like
According to the community guide at lagoslifeguide.com (not confirmed by the developer, and subject to change):
| Nepo Baby | LAPO Baby | |
|---|---|---|
| Starting cash | Around ₦500k | A ₦60k loan |
| Home | Lekki Phase 1 flat, rent covered by a parent | Find your own |
| Job | Starts as a bank branch manager | Starts from the bottom |
| Perks | Access to a parent's car | Learns skills 25% faster |
| Catch | — | Repay ₦72k at ₦12k a week |
One fan site also describes a third, middle-class outcome, but most coverage only mentions Nepo and LAPO.
You can't re-roll
The lottery happens once per account. Making new accounts to fish for a Nepo start breaks the game's rules on multiple accounts, so don't risk a ban.
How to win as a Nepo Baby
- Don't waste the head start. It's easy to blow ₦500k at Quilox. Put some into a business early.
- Keep training skills. Your starting job is generous, but promotions still need skills.
- Plan for independence. Perks tied to your parents won't make you a big man on their own.
How to win as a LAPO Baby
- Clear the loan first. Weekly repayments plus rent can sink you if you fall behind.
- Lean into faster skill growth. Skills are how you jump into better-paying careers, and you learn faster than Nepo players.
- Live cheap, stack gigs. Mushin or Yaba rent and side gigs keep you afloat until promotions kick in.
So which is better?
Nepo is easier early on. LAPO's faster learning can catch up over time — and "LAPO to landlord" stories are some of the best gist in the game.
